How to Train a Doberman Pinscher – Rules That Apply

Training a Doberman is not that difficult due to the activeness of this breed. Every dog needs certain amount and quality of training to adjust with its human family. The training needs would vary with every dog breed’s peculiar personality traits. Even within a breed, the dogs carry their different temperaments, which necessitate modifications in the approach toward training. Nevertheless, there are some features that are intrinsic to each breed, and must be understood before one even thinks of having a particular dog. Right now, let’s take up the case of Doberman Pinscher (also spelled as, Dobermann) and find out the ways which would effectively help in training this muscular canine.

Past and Present

The breed originated in Germany in the late 19th century by Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann. It is one of the most common dog breeds which are kept by humans as pet. A Dobe can also assume the role of a working dog and undertake many responsibilities with its attributes of intelligence, alertness and courage.

Doberman has a short and thick coat which usually comes in the shade of black, black and tan, and undergoes minimum shedding. The average life expectancy of a Doberman is between 10 to 14 years; they can grow up to 24 to 28 inches in height, and weigh around 60 to 90 pounds. They are famous for being an excellent guard dog, and indeed they are one of the best guardian dogs.

The pedigree of Doberman is very diverse and includes dogs like strong and athletic Rottweiler, the powerful and energetic German Pinscher, and the alert and intelligent Manchester Terrier. That can explain, in some measure, the fantastic blend of characteristics that a Doberman is blessed with.

A Doberman is quite a big dog, and an ideal home for it should be large enough to give it enough outlets for burning its energy; a small home would put more pressure on you as a pet owner to have a proper and extended schedule of daily exercise for the dog.

Bred as a guard dog, the Doberman certainly possesses an aggressive temperament; however, over the years the domestic way of life has subdued the aggressive side of the dog to a certain extent. And with the right training the quick learner can easily take up the roles of both a house pet and a first-rate guard dog.

The Training Part

A Doberman puppy looks cute like any other puppy, but it wouldn’t take long for them to attain their large size. Thus, it’s important to give proper thought to its training. The dog is intelligent enough to learn quickly still it’s not easy to train a Dobie. Only a person with a good amount of experience in training and dealing with dogs, in general, would be able to handle a Doberman. The basic aim of training the dog is to make it aware of the various acceptable ways of having its needs and wants fulfilled.

Consistent Rules

While training, one of the most significant points to remember is to remain consistence. Without exception, each of the rules should be implemented in the same manner, every time. That will reinforce the regulations and help them take a firm root inside the dog’s mind.

Make use of its attention Seeking attribute

Just like their human counterparts, the Doberman likes importance, care; being ignored hurts them too. Utilizing this part of their nature, you can clearly tell the dog what actions of it are acceptable and what are not – loving attention on doing something appropriate, and cold shoulder on committing something odd.

One rule for every age group

Since the day one, try to have certain strict guidelines; the first of the commandments should be that something which would not be tolerated in an adult dog should also be disapproved in a puppy, no matter how innocent the little one seems.

The conviction you place on your training is also very important. You have to present and maintain your status as a leader, hence, don’t enforce the commands that you feel the dog wouldn’t follow or which you would fail to reinforce. You need to be firm even with the little Dobie, as encouraging their inherent dominant nature would only subdue your authority.

Now don’t get too mean with this loyal companion – love it, be affectionate, just keep in mind that Doberman is a strong creature, and with great power comes great responsibility! And being its master you need to make the dog realize its responsibilities.

Dog toys and treats

It’s getting a bit too harsh for the Fido, isn’t it? Delight it from time to time for displaying obedience and quick learning skills with dog treats and toys.

Your aim should be to become the master of your dog’s mind, that is, acquire for yourself the space of its chief or commander. Physical punishments are not at all suggested neither would the dog respond to it the way you expect it to. A firm verbal ‘NO’ should be enough to make the dog understand its unapproved actions.

A pet dog is a breathing and moving gift of ample love and loyalty. Just take care that the qualities of the dog are used for the right purposes; and the negative impact is reduced to the minimum. After all, a well trained dog is not less than an apple of its owner’s eyes!
