• History

Affenpinscher is one of the most ancient toy dog breeds. It is said that these dogs are related to the Brussels Griffon and probably to the terrier. These dogs are named “Monkey Dog” due to its monkey-like facial expression and structure. Affenpinschers were originated in Germany, and the word Affenpinscher means “Monkey Terrier.”

Many people believe that the first Affenpinschers were comparatively larger in size as they were the farm dogs that worked as ratters. These dogs were miniaturized and became house pets during the 18^th and 19^th centuries. They are still ruthless hunters of mice and are counted among outstanding watchdogs. Today, they are bred as companion dogs. They were admitted to the American Kennel Club’s studbook in the year 1936.

The Affenpinscher is a small dog breed (also known as toy dog breed) which is known for its shaggy, wiry-type coat. Their face hair is longer than the rest of the body which gives them distinctive look. They are the smaller version of working terriers and are not delicate dogs. They have square body, with a deep, broad chest.

The head of this dog breed is round with a pronounced stop, which is the transition area from the back skull to the muzzle. Their lower jaw is undershot, and wide enough for the lower teeth to be straight and even, projecting below the dog’s short nose. Their prominent eyes are round and black.
