History- Tibetan Mastiff’s history is heavily debated. Genetics suggest that this breed of dogs was genetically diverged from wolves about 58,000 years ago, more than 16,000 years before most other breed of dogs. This breed was popular in 19th century England, and during this time King George IV owned a pair of Tibetan Mastiff.

This breed slowly lost its popularity and almost became extinct. Its population saw a surge in the 1980s after becoming an AKC recognized breed. These dogs appeared in the Westminster Dog Show for the first time in the year 2008, and have since been the subject of numerous news stories of purebred dogs. These breeds are counted among the costliest dog breeds and the latest example occurred in the year 2014 when a Chinese buyer purchased this breed of puppy for more than $2 million.

Grooming and Care- These dogs have thick double coat. Males have a more lavish covering than that of females. The heavy undercoat is woolly and soft and the topcoat is straight with hard texture. There is no need to trim the coat unless you want to give the feet of these dogs a neater appearance. If you provide regular brushing to this dog, he should not need frequent bathing.
