Due to their long and drooping ears, the Irish Setter is a great candidate for problems such as otitis and other ear diseases. It is recommended to always inspect your pet's ears and, if possible, allow them to receive ventilation (you can simply fold your furry's ears for a few minutes every day). Using snoods, which protect the fur in the region, can be an option when going to feed or drink water - as they can get dirty in this region easily. The setter's fur doesn't usually develop many knots, but it needs to be brushed frequently, in addition to clipping at least twice a year. The breed can have problems such as: progressive retinal atrophy, which impairs the pet's vision, hip dysplasia, which causes pain, discomfort and locomotion problems, osteochondritis dissecans, which causes pain and irregular gait (limping) and gastric torsion. Avoid allowing your setter to exercise after eating or drinking too much water, as this condition can be life-threatening.

Curiosities

Setters have a really amazing nose. It is difficult to deceive them or hide things from a dog of this breed. Use this to your advantage and for your pet's benefit: play games of search for smell with the toys he likes the most or with snacks of his choice.

Intelligence

The Irish Setter is a very cooperative dog that enjoys running errands with its human parents. Therefore, their education is usually easy and pleasant for both sides. Intelligent, they learn quickly, but they do much better with subtle commands and kindness. Heavy scolding doesn't convince setters, who may get hurt and give up trying. As they are hunting dogs, it is very interesting to encourage them to find objects, snacks and even people. Running after toys is also his forte, so the reward whenever he hits something can be like this.

Temperament

The Irish Setter is a very affable and lively dog. He is always ready to play, especially if he can fetch objects (something that reminds him of his race's initial function). The race tends to never show aggression, not even when they try their patience, preferring to walk away rather than get into a conflict. Setters tend to get along very well with people of different ages and also with other species, as long as they are properly socialized when young. They are dogs full of energy and are usually very willing to please their family.
