A dog parent is always looking to fill his/her pooch’s diet with nutritious ingredients. There’s a natural and wise tendency to look out for health benefits in every edible thing we purchase for our furry babies. Having real control on what all enters our dogs’ tummies calls for preparing a snack or two with our very own hands. Though it might be a bit time-consuming process to prepare all these stuffs, all the efforts are worth it for your pooch to stay healthy. 1) Frozen Apple Dog Treat: This is the perfect cooling treat for your pooch to beat the summer heat.
Ingredients: 2 Apples, 1 Cup Non-Fat Plain Greek Yogurt and Water.
Directions: The apples need to be sliced into small sections. Remember to remove the seeds/pip and tough central part/core from the fruit. Combine apple slices, yogurt and some water in a blender and blend them to get a liquid consistency. Pour the concoction into an ice cube tray and let it set in the freezer until hard.
A point to note is that the dog must be fed only one cube at a time. You can transfer the remaining treats in a container and stock up in the freezer.
2) Almond Oatmeal hypoallergenic Snack: This wholesome treat is unlikely to cause an allergic reaction, hence ideal for dogs bothered by food allergies.
Ingredients: 1 Cup Rice Flour, ½ Cup Oatmeal, ½ Cup Almond Butter, 2 Eggs and 2 Tablespoons of Water.
Directions: You’ll have to preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Properly mix up all ingredients except the water in a bowl. For the dough to form well add 1 teaspoon water at a time. On a floured surface spread the dough to ¼ inch thickness and cut into interesting shapes. Place the cut-outs on an evenly greased cookie sheet and bake them at 350 degrees for about 12 minutes for the bottoms to turn a little brown. Remove from the oven and let the treats cool down. Store them in an airtight jar.
3) Frozen Peanut Butter Yogurt: Here’s another cool snack to help your pooch survive the hot weather.
Ingredients: 32 Ounces Vanilla Yogurt & 1 Cup Peanut Butter.
Directions: Melt the peanut butter in the microwave. Mix the melted peanut butter and yogurt. Transfer the mixture into cupcake papers and place in the freezer.
4) Banana- Almond Treats for puppies: These will help you a great deal while training your pup. Also a little over-eating can be over-looked with this healthful homemade delicacy.
Ingredients: 1 Organic Egg, ¾ Cup Unsalted Almond Butter, 1/3 of an Organic Banana and 1 Teaspoon Ground Cinnamon.
Instructions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Then line a baking sheet/metal tray with parchment paper. Mash the banana in a big bowl. Once the banana is mashed add to it the remaining ingredients. Blend them together with a fork. The resultant batter must be thick and gooey. Scoop out tiny dollops on to the parchment paper and place in the oven for 5 minutes. Post this you will have to rotate the baking pan and bake for another 5 minutes. Remove the treats from the oven and let them cool. These should ideally last for about a week.
5) Meat & Potato dog snack: This can be a perfect post work-out snack for your pet dog.
Ingredients: Potato & Unseasoned Portion of Meat.
Directions: Cut the two ingredients into ½ inch thick pieces and cover them with a little cooking spray. Preheat an oven at 200 degrees. Bake these ingredients until they dry up.
You must always avoid using an ingredient your pet is allergic to when preparing a dog treat at home. After serving the pet a safe amount of the homemade treats the leftovers can be stored in an airtight container and placed in the refrigerator to retain their freshness over the next few days.
