The tradition of conferring honor and appreciation upon the canine artistes began at the Cannes film festival in the year 2001. The Palm dog award (a tradition organized/initiated by Toby Rose) is given to dog/dogs for an outstanding performance in a movie. It is presented each year by internationally acclaimed film critics at the festival. The Maltipoo named ‘Lucky’ won the prestigious leather canine collar with PALM DOG inscribed on it last year for his stupendous role in Arabian nights directed by Miguel Gomes.

Also dogs in animations are likewise considered for the prize. ‘Dug’ the golden retriever in the cartoon/animation UP won the Palm award for his delightful character in the year 2009. ‘Otis’ the Jack Russell won much critical acclaim and the Palm award in the very first year (2001’) of its introduction for The Anniversary Party directed by Jennifer Jason Leigh and Alan Cumming.
In a first for the Palm award ceremony `Nellie’ the English bulldog (top image) was awarded with the prestigious prize posthumously for the year 2016 for playing Marvin in the film Paterson directed by Jim Jarmusch and produced by Carter Logan who also happen to accept the honor on behalf of the outstanding canine star performer and director Jarmusch who was unable to attend this commemoration. Mister Logan highlighted an important facet of Nellie being a rescue dog. He urged those in the audience to support dog adoption contrary to buying one as a gesture of an appropriate homage to our eternal star Nellie.
The wonderful approach towards constantly featuring three legged canines in his films, English director Ken Loach won the Palm Dog Manitarian award for the current year at Cannes 2016.
