Taking Care of a Mastiff Puppy

Introduction – Taking care of a mastiff puppy is very similar to taking care of a small baby. Mastiff puppies are very childlike and need extra care and attention. Make sure that you have a ‘puppy friendly’ home before you get a mastiff puppy. Mastiff puppies are very naughty and active. They love to explore every and anything in the house. Keep away those things which can cause any kind of harm to mastiff puppy. To do this, try and see the house from his point of view. Get down on the floor and see for anything which can be harmful like – any sharp edges, loose electrical wiring, plastic bags etc. Remove all such things immediately. They love to sleep in a warm and cozy bed. It is advisable not to leave your puppy unattended or alone at any time. Keep him away from of, windows and open balconies. Mastiff puppies are very playful by nature and they love to play with toilet bowl water. They can make it a habit and which can be tough to break later on. It is advisable to keep the toilet door locked.

Training – Training your dog on how to socialize is very important. Whatever you teach the puppy, it will stay with him forever. He will learn about his environment and people at a young age. Spend time to play with your puppy daily. This keeps him happy and active. Take him out to new places and introduce him to new people. Leash training is important. It can begin by making the puppy familiarize with a collar. Once he gets used to it you can start using the leash. Basic command training can be done and you can teach him easy commands like – come, sit, heal etc.

 Nutrition –Correct diet is very important for your furry friend. Dietary requirements differ from breed to breed. Many varieties of dog foods are available in the market. You can pick the best dog food. Feed them eggs and rice and maybe, smaller portion of meat. Puppies don’t need lots of food so feeding them twice or thrice a day is enough. Make sure that clean water is always available for your dog.

Grooming and Coat – Keeping a dog healthy is dependent on the right kind of grooming. It ensures their overall well being. Always maintain good hygiene. Grooming is not only about taking care of their coat. Taking care of a mastiff puppy is like taking care of a child. You must brush him regularly. Regularly check on his paws, ears and mouth for any infection or ticks. Puppies can get infected very quickly so pay extra attention. You can wipe his paws if they are dirty. Rub him gently and give him a nice massage. He will love it and this will also help to build a strong and loving bond with him.

How much to feed? Feed your puppy 3-4 times in a day. The food can be a combination of dry and moistened food.
