Characteristics of the Dachshund

Dachshund is a curious, bold dog breed who loves to explore and dig. They might be the smallest of the hounds, yet they are the biggest in spirits. The breeds have their origin in Germany. In German, “Dach” translates to Badger and “hund” stands for dog. They were bred to hunt for badgers, rabbit and other small games and hence the name. The structure of Dachshunds was perfect for reaching animals in their burrows, mainly foxes and badgers, which is why in some regions it earned the nickname "badger".

Cota

Dachshund breed can be found with short hair, long hair and wire hair. The Shorthair Dachshund is the oldest, with a glossy, dense coat. Long hairs Dachshunds on the other hand have a shiny, silky and slightly wavy coat. As for color, they can come in unicolor, bicolor or even all spotted (which takes the name of harlequin), but the basic color is always black, red or gray. Coat care of a Dachshund is essential for maintaining excellent health in them. Short-haired Dachshunds require the least grooming while the long-haired Dachshunds need frequent brushing to prevent problems like tangling and matting of the hair. Remember that these dogs have drooped ears too, which needs to be cleaned with a solution preferred by the vet. For the long hair and the wire Dachshunds, one needs to trim the excess hair between their paw pads. Their nails also requires trimming once in every 2 weeks.

Health

Even though Dachshund's anatomy is excellent for many activities, this also makes them predisposed to some diseases, mainly involving the spine. The pressure created by high-impact movements such as, going up and down on stairs or even from furniture like the sofa, can be huge on the short paws and elongated spine of Dachshunds. You may consider using ramps so that your dogs has easy access to higher places and this should always be used. He will have to be trained to learn that he should only go up or down that specific place. Even so, Dachshunds are very active and playful puppies, who love to socialise and dig! As much as physical activity is essential, it should not be overdone.

Curiosities

Dachshunds were used 300 years ago in Germany as a Badger dog to chase and flush out badgers and to hunt smaller preys like rabbits. Dachshunds come in 12 different colours and they all have different kinds of markings. The breed was Queen Victoria’s favourite. Dachshunds were the first Olympic Mascot in 1972 Munich Olympic Games. The breed has a longer life span making it one of the longest living dog breeds. An average lifespan of a Dachshund is 14 years. Dachshunds are energetic and athletic that they even took part in dog races during the ’70s in Australia.

Intelligence

In the book The Intelligence of Dogs by Stanley Coren, the Dachshund ranks 49th. Though Dachshund is a perceptive dog who learns quickly, there is an issue with his stubbornness. Its agitation and strong personality makes it a lot of difficult to train this puppy. Hence, it is Start training as soon as he's still a puppy. Regular exercise and frequent play will also balance this daredevil's energy, making him more obedient and centred.

Temperament

They may be small, but inside a Dachshund, you will find tons of energy stored . They are electric, love to play and run (and dig, don't forget) for a considerable amount of time without getting tired. While they are very sociable and independent, they are loyal and protective at the same time. Despite not being aggressive, he is very alert and is always ready to call his human's attention if something unusual comes his way.

Lifetime

The Dachshund has an average life expectancy of between 12 and 15 years.

History of Dachshunds

A number of writers and dachshund experts have theorized that the origin of the Dachshund goes back to ancient Egypt and therefore have been in existence for over a staggering 4000 years!. An inscription on the ancient monument of an Egyptian pharaoh reads ”Teka”. This led some to believe that this is the root of the German word “ Teckel” which translates to our beloved hound dog in English. The word ‘Dachshund’ refers to badger dog in German. Original Dachshunds in the 18th Century in Germany were much larger to their contemporary counterparts. They had a weight between 14 and 18 Kg. This breed was used for killing badgers and were used for hunting rabbits and foxes. Since the existential evidence of the correct origin of this breed is unclear, the debate about their early ancestors still continues. Dachshunds have conventionally been viewed as a symbol of Germany. The breed was chosen as the first Olympic Mascot in 1972 Munich Olympic Games.
