The Dachshund is a small scent hound with a distinctively elongated body and short legs. The Dachshund was bred in Germany. The dachshunds are classified in two different types, Standard Dachshunds and Miniature Dachshunds. This dog is active and loves to play games.

The Dachshund has a great sense of humor, they are loyal and attached towards his family. He becomes wary and aggressive towards the strangers and sometimes starts barking. He has a keen sense of smell and makes a good watchdog.

Like every other dog Dachshunds also needs superior training. It is imperative to give training to the Dachshunds as they can be stubborn sometimes. They are very difficult breed to train as they make their own decisions. They can also exhibit some behaviors of hunting therefore one need to train them.

Grooming

Coat care is essential to keep the dog to remove the dead hairs from the body. Some Dachshunds have small coat and some have long coats. The Short coat dachshunds require the least grooming and wire-haired dachshunds require frequent brushing to prevent tangling. They have dropped ears that need to be cleaned with a solution suggested by the vet. For the long hair and the wire Dachshunds, one needs to trim the excess hair between their paw pads. Their nails also requires trimming after 2 weeks.

The Dachshund has an average lifespan of 12 to 15 years. They do suffer from the health problems like the other breed of dogs. They are Prone to spinal disc problems, urinary tract problems, diabetes and heart problems. They may also get the mast cell tumors. In addition Dachshunds have a tendency to become gain weight and become lazy. They need a daily walk or some activity at home to keep them healthy and fit. But, over exercise can develop joint problems. They are also prone to spinal damage, therefore; they should not be allowed to jump. As a concerned owner one must visit to a vet to ensure the good health of their adorable pet.
