Health

The azawakh tends to be quite healthy and hardy. This dog is able to do a lot of physical activity without getting tired, but you need to set limits for him - he may not want to stop even when he gets close to exhaustion. They can develop problems in their ears, such as ear infections, and also build up a lot of plaque on their teeth (tartar). Frequent cleaning and visits to the veterinarian at least twice a year can prevent or treat problems before they are more advanced. Some specimens may have hip dysplasia, a condition that generates intense pain and difficulty in locomotion due to a “wrong fit” in the hip joint. Like many racing dogs, the azawakh can have Wobbler's Disease, a kind of narrowing of the spinal canal, something that can cause neurological changes resulting from spinal cord compression.

Curiosities

A dog of this breed can reach a speed of almost 70 km/h in a matter of seconds. Unlike other hunting breeds, it does not usually kill or seize its prey, but reaches and surrounds it so that the hunter can reach the place before the animal flees. The breed is not prone to weight gain, his hip bones and even his vertebrae can be quite apparent without him being in poor health.

Intelligence

Azawakhs are intelligent and obedient, but they need a lot of physical and mental activity so they don't become destructive and stubborn. Small daily walks are not enough for them. Encourage your pet to exercise with you and this will certainly make the bond between you even more special.

Temperament

In general, the azawakh is a very affectionate dog, but he usually chooses one or two family members as his favorites. They can be suspicious of strangers and keep away, watching, until they are sure they are not a threat to their territory. He is usually quite playful, likes to run after objects and interact with people. When well socialized, they get along well with other animals, the elderly and children. Otherwise, they can be a bit of a stalker.

Lifetime

An Azawakh dog can live up to 15 years in good health.
