Curiosities

Developed in the mountains of the southern US in the 1700s, the Coonhound was used to sniff out raccoons, bears, deer and other animals. The direct ancestor of the breed is the English Foxhound.

Intelligence

Be prepared for some emotions, as the Coonhound is often stubborn and training him can be quite a challenge, especially for beginners. Constant, positive and patient training can bring great results in the medium or long term, as the dog is quite intelligent. However, even if well educated, never fail to watch him, because when this furry one usually wants to hunt, it is very difficult to dissuade him from the idea.

Temperament

The Coonhound has a calm temperament, gets along well with children (because they have the same energy level) and can also get along well with other pets, as long as they are used to it from an early age. Because it has a guard instinct, it will likely bark whenever a stranger approaches to alert the family. Although it may seem intimidating to many, the saying “a dog that barks doesn't bite” suits him very well.
