In general, the Portuguese water dog is usually quite healthy and resistant. The breed, however, has a genetic predisposition to hip dysplasia and eye problems such as cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy.

Curiosities

The Portuguese water dog appeared in the Algarve, in the 16th century, when it accompanied fishermen and helped them to pick up objects that had fallen into the sea. They were also used as “messenger dogs”, which sent letters from one boat to another.

Intelligence

Water dogs from Portugal can bark excessively, but they are usually extremely obedient - which facilitates their education. By nature, they love to do what is asked of them and are not stubborn. They are quite sensitive and therefore need gentle trainers. Scolding is often unnecessary for the breed, which most of the time is open to new lessons and learning. They are very intelligent dogs and this can be used in favor of their owners, as it is something that facilitates - and a lot - the bond with the water dog.

Temperament

Faithful and very affectionate with its humans, the water dog is also usually very receptive to other animals. If socialized from a young age, he is always friendly, standing out as a good company for children and the elderly.

Lifetime

The life expectancy of a Portuguese water dog is around 15 years.
