Health

The four types of Belgian Shepherds are healthy, however, Laekenois are prone to certain diseases such as epilepsy, cataracts, congenital hypotrichosis, superficial keratitis, progressive retinal atrophy and coxofemoral (hip) dysplasia. It is worth mentioning that a dog of the breed will not have all or none of these problems, but they are predisposed and, therefore, they should attend a veterinarian regularly.

Curiosities

The coat of the Belgian Shepherd Laekenois was developed mainly for him to face the climatic changes of Belgium, his country of origin. For this reason, the breed copes very well with high and low temperatures.

Intelligence

These dogs are extremely intelligent and love to learn new things. Even some specimens compete in dog sports such as Agility and Obedience. They need firm training, but at the same time mild, as they don't do as well with rigidity and severity - just like all dogs.

Temperament

The Belgian Shepherd Laekenois is an active, alert dog with an enviable sense of protection and defense, making it a great family guard dog. Thanks to the herding instinct, he may not get along so well with strangers, so it is necessary to socialize him from an early age so that he does not have unwanted behaviors when he reaches adulthood.

Lifetime

A Belgian Shepherd Laekenois lives, on average, between 12 and 14 years.
